Concept
of Sex
Sex refers to the biological
characteristics that distinguish males and females. These differences are universal,
natural, and determined at birth. Sex is primarily based on physical and
physiological features such as reproductive organs, chromosomes, and hormones.
For example, females have the biological ability to give birth and breastfeed,
while males produce sperm. Chromosomal patterns (XX for females and XY for
males) and hormones like testosterone in males and estrogen and progesterone in
females further define biological sex. These characteristics are permanent and
remain constant across cultures and societies.
Sex
is therefore understood as a biological identity that does not change according
to social or cultural contexts. Historically, differences based on sex have
often been used to justify inequalities, with women’s marginalization being
wrongly considered a natural outcome of biological differences.

In a traditional or patriarchal family, gender roles are clearly defined and rigid. Men are usually seen as the head of the family and the primary breadwinners, responsible for earning income and making major decisions. Women, on the other hand, are expected to take care of domestic responsibilities such as cooking, cleaning, and child-rearing. This structure often reinforces gender inequality and limits women’s participation in decision-making and economic activities.
In a nuclear family, gender roles may still follow traditional patterns, but there is increasing flexibility. Both men and women may share responsibilities, especially in urban and educated settings. Women often participate in the workforce, and men may contribute to household chores and childcare. This shared responsibility promotes mutual respect and supports gender equality.
In a joint family, roles are often influenced by hierarchy and age along with gender. Elder male members typically hold authority, while women, especially daughters-in-law, are expected to manage household duties under the guidance of senior women. However, decision-making power may still be concentrated among male members, though elderly women can also have influence within the household.
In single-parent families, gender roles become more fluid as one parent takes on multiple responsibilities regardless of gender. For example, a single mother may fulfill both earning and caregiving roles, while a single father may take on nurturing and household responsibilities. This structure challenges traditional gender norms and demonstrates that roles are not inherently linked to sex.
In modern or egalitarian families, gender roles are more balanced and based on ability, interest, and mutual understanding rather than traditional expectations. Both partners share economic, domestic, and parenting responsibilities equally. Such families promote gender equality, cooperation, and respect, creating a more inclusive and supportive environment.
Gender Roles in Caste
Gender roles within the caste system are shaped by the combined influence of social hierarchy, cultural traditions, and long-standing customs. Caste not only determines social status but also strongly influences the roles, responsibilities, and expectations assigned to men and women in society.
In the Indian context, the caste system is traditionally based on the Varna system, which divides society into four main groups: Brahmins (priests), Kshatriyas (warriors), Vaishyas (traders), and Shudras (laborers). Each Varna has specific duties (dharma), and gender roles within these groups are also clearly defined and regulated according to tradition.
In traditional caste-based societies, gender roles are rigid and clearly defined, with strict expectations for behavior. Men are generally expected to be the protectors, decision-makers, and economic providers of the family. Women, on the other hand, are expected to maintain family honor, perform domestic duties, and adhere to cultural norms such as modesty and obedience. These roles are often more restrictive in higher castes, where maintaining purity and status is emphasized.
In many caste groups, occupational roles are also gender-specific. Gender Roles in Religion

While many religions preach equality, social practices have often created differences in the roles and status of men and women.
In Hinduism, gender roles have traditionally been influenced by patriarchal customs. Men are considered the heads of the family and are responsible for performing religious rituals and earning for the family. Women are respected as embodiments of divine power (Shakti), yet their roles are often confined to marriage, motherhood, and household responsibilities. In earlier times, women’s education and participation in rituals were restricted, and practices like early marriage were common. However, in modern times, reforms have led to increased participation of women as priests and in religious activities.
In Buddhism, gender equality is emphasized in theory. It teaches that both men and women can attain enlightenment, and women were allowed to become nuns. Buddhism challenged traditional inequalities of caste and gender, offering women opportunities for spiritual growth and independence. However, in practice, monks often hold higher authority than nuns, and cultural influences sometimes limit women’s roles.
In Christianity, men and women are considered spiritually equal before God. Women have played important roles as nuns, saints, and contributors to charitable work. Traditionally, leadership roles such as priests were dominated by men, especially in certain denominations like the Roman Catholic Church. However, modern reforms in many Christian communities have opened leadership positions, allowing women to serve as pastors and bishops.
In Islam, religious teachings emphasize equality in dignity and moral responsibility between men and women. Men are generally viewed as protectors and providers, while women are seen as caretakers of the family. Women are granted rights to education, property, and inheritance. However, in practice, cultural interpretations and personal laws sometimes restrict women’s roles in areas such as marriage and divorce. In Sikhism, strong emphasis is placed on gender equality. Founded by Guru Nanak, Sikhism rejects discrimination based on gender. Since economic resources are sufficient, women may not need to work for income, and their roles are often centered around family care and social responsibilities. However, in modern upper-class families, women are increasingly pursuing careers and leadership roles, showing gradual change.
Overall, the idea of “man as a breadwinner and woman as a homemaker” has historically influenced all classes, but its application varies depending on economic conditions and social expectations. Lower-class families show more shared roles due to necessity, middle-class families show gradual change, and upper-class families often maintain traditional roles with emerging modern influences.

Their fashion, lifestyle, and opinions influence how people think about identity and self-expression. Some promote equality and individuality, while others may still reinforce unrealistic beauty standards and stereotypes.
Gender Roles in Media
Media plays a powerful role in shaping and influencing gender roles in society. It includes television, films, advertisements, newspapers, magazines, and social media platforms. Through repeated images, messages, and representations, media creates and reinforces ideas about how men and women should behave, look, and interact.
Traditionally, media has portrayed men as strong, independent, dominant, and career-oriented, often shown as leaders, decision-makers, and protectors. In contrast, women are frequently depicted as caring, emotional, dependent, and focused on beauty and family roles. Such portrayals reinforce stereotypical gender roles and create fixed expectations in society.
In advertisements, gender roles are strongly visible. Men are often associated with products related to strength, technology, and leadership, while women are commonly shown promoting household products, beauty items, and caregiving roles. These repeated images influence viewers, especially children, to internalize traditional gender expectations.
